Improve this question. It was a magical year for movies, mostly because of the release of The Craft , which quickly became canon for millions of teenage girls, myself included. It was a world away from its contemporaries, like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Practical Magic , due to its real-world themes, iconic '90s fashion, and subversion of female gender roles.
Plus the fight scenes were epic. And even though it tackled some pretty heavy issues at the time — it was not exactly light viewing — you still might have missed some of the deeper observations. Here are some of the things you only notice about The Craft when you're an adult. It was quite clear back in '96 that the men in The Craft are pretty terrible across the board. Between abusive step-fathers and cruel classmates, you can't get much lower than that. But as an adult you notice specifically that these men all perpetuate rape culture.
Mitt, a fairly minor character, does this by calling Sarah a "snail trail" about eight minutes into the movie. But he's not as bad as Chris, who does a litany of rapey things, like calling Nancy a slut, then stating that he "doesn't know from experience or anything.
When Sarah refuses, he proceeds to lie to everyone in school, saying she's the lousiest lay he's ever had. When she confronts him, he acts like he's the one turning her down, saying to her, "I don't wanna go out with you again.
Please stop begging, it's pathetic. And then he legit tries to rape Sarah around the hour mark, showing just how steeped in rape culture thinking he is. Rochelle is the target of some pretty horrific racist bullying at the hands of Laura, a blonde haired, blue-eyed classmate who seems bent on making Rochelle's life hell.
First, Laura yells "shark" to distract Rochelle from diving, which could have led to her getting injured. Then, later in the locker room, Laura picks up her hair brush and says, "Oh god, look. There is a pubic hair in my brush. Oh no, wait. That's just one of Rochelle's little nappy hairs. Rochelle is understandably hurt, and asks Laura why she does this. She responds, "Because I don't like negroids. And while Rochelle does get her revenge — thanks to magic, Laura's hair starts falling out — this kind of racist cruelty is clearly traumatizing.
Bonnie was severely burned as a child and has the scarring all over her body to show it. Rochelle : He said the same stuff about Nancy. Nancy : Told you he was a jerk. Bonnie : [to an attractive passer-by] Hi! Bonnie : Don't be shy honey. Nice ass! Rochelle : Bonnie! Bonnie : What? He has a cute butt. Sarah : You're a slut. Rochelle : Maybe you should ask him out. Sarah : You know it. Bonnie : [laughs] Yeah, "Hey, I like your butt.
Do you want to have dinner? Sarah : [Teaching the game "light as a feather; stiff as a board] You take your index finger and your middle finger and put it under her like this.
Sarah : [Continuing] Now you have to imagine that she's incredibly light; like she's made of air. Bonnie : Is that her whole body or just her head? Rochelle : Cow! Sarah : Guys, concentrate or it's not gonna work. Nancy : [everyone is silent briefly, until Nancy laughs] I think I sprained my finger. Rochelle : Shut up! Sarah : [Trying not to smile] Guys, focus! Nancy , Sarah , Bonnie : [they start chanting] Light as a feather, stiff as a board. Light as a feather, stiff as a board.
Sarah : [opens her eyes] Holy shit. Rochelle : [Eyes closed] You guys, it's not working. Rochelle : Wow. Sarah : Shut up or you're gonna fall!
Rochelle : How do I get down? Whose got the instructions? Sarah : Just concentrate. Rochelle : Ow! My butt! Bonnie : [about running away when the snake man is hit by a car] The car hit him, and we made it happen!
Nancy : [diplomatic] Maybe, maybe not. Bonnie : [Excited] Definitely! I thought to myself, "it's going to hit him". Rochelle : [also excited] I thought it too! Nancy : Well, I did too Bonnie : Sarah, did you think it?
Sarah : [Slightly apprehensive] Yeah. Bonnie : Then that's it, Sarah's the forth! North, South, East, and West; we can make things happen! This is it, this is real. Nancy : [Finally starting to share the excitement] Shit. Sarah : What's wrong with her? Rochelle : Her spell's not working. Bonnie : What spell? Rochelle : I don't know. She doesn't want to be white trash anymore.
I told her, "You're white honey! Just get over it. Bonnie : The almanac says today will bring an arrival or something. Nancy : Yeah, wonderful.
I'm getting my rag. Bonnie : A new wholeness and with it a new balance, earth air, fire, water Nancy : We don't need a fourth. Rochelle : Four would make a circle. Nancy : Maybe she could be our fourth? Nancy : I love a woman in uniform!
Bonnie : So does stuff like tonight happen to you a lot? Sarah : No. Not like that. Sarah : Other Rochelle : Where did you learn it? Sarah : I don't know. Bonnie : [Nods] A natural witch. Nancy : [Driving] Can you guys tell me what color that light is?
Sarah : It's red. Nancy : [keeps driving, puts on a faux confused voice] Doesn't red mean stop? Bonnie : [Playfully] Yeah, red means stop. Sarah : [concerned] It's like what Lirio was talking about; throwing things out of balance. I know you guys think we're getting what we want now, but it's going to come back to us, threefold.
Bonnie : [Mockingly] Ohh! As a parting shot, Sarah tells Bonnie and Rochelle to be careful, as they do not want to end up like Nancy. At the beginning of the film, Bonnie is shown to be kind and sweet-natured, though also very shy and weak-willed. This largely stemmed from her severe scarring, which Bonnie felt very self-conscious about, to the point where she even referred to herself as a "monster" and was willing to do just about anything to get rid of them. After seeing Sarah use magic in class, she was the first to believe Sarah should join their coven.
After using magic to heal her scars, Bonnie changes drastically, becoming far more confident and outspoken. She dresses in more revealing clothes, wears make-up, and carries herself with dignity.
She also flirts with boys or states her opinion on things. Unfortunately, Bonnie also becomes increasingly self-absorbed and vain, with Sarah saying she has become "completely narcissistic". Bonnie dismisses this and turns on Sarah, using magic to attack and frighten her, demonstrating her darker and more malicious side. However, Bonnie does express reluctance at actually causing serious harm to Sarah, feeling that Nancy has taken things too far.
Despite this, she dismisses it as a joke and even asks Sarah if she wants to hang out some time, though Sarah clearly does not see the funny side and lets Bonnie know exactly what she thinks of her and her so-called 'pranks'. Bonnie is a witch, thus possessing magical talents. She is capable of focusing on an intent and outcome and willing it to happen. Once her coven was at full quota and full magical power, she along with the others was able to manipulate magic at your disposal without much effort.
